What is Emmett and the Respect Network?
Emmett and its partner The Respect Network are creating the world's first global private network of personal, business, and not-for-profit clouds. The purpose is to enable members anywhere in the world to share sensitive data over trusted private connections just as easily as they can share data publicly on social networks like Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and Google+.
What Is A Personal Cloud?
A personal cloud is a safe place to store your personal data. You can access it from any device and you always have complete ownership and control. A personal cloud is also a safe place to share your data through connections you (and only you) can make with other people and businesses on the network.
The data you store in your Emmett personal cloud is 100% private. Only you can decide who to share it with, whether it's a photo of your child or a copy of your tax return. Your personal cloud can also be encrypted so that only you or people you share it with can view it, and we're working to make the security ever stronger as the Respect Network grows.
To utilize the benefits of a Personal Cloud you must have a cloud name. A cloud name is a simple human-friendly address for your Personal Cloud. Just as telephones need phone numbers and email accounts need email addresses, your Personal Cloud needs an address for sending and receiving messages and sharing data. A sample address is "=John."
What is a Cloud Name?
A cloud name is a unique communications address for each person, business, and not-for-profit on the Respect Network. It is similar to a domain name on the internet such as example.com, however, a personal cloud name starts with an = symbol and a not for profit or business cloud name starts with a + symbol. For example: =forrest.gump for a personal cloud, and +Emmett for a not-for-profit cloud.
What is a Not-For-Profit Cloud or Business Cloud?
A not-for-profit or business cloud is just like a personal cloud except it is owned and controlled by a not-for-profit organization or business. Not-for-profit and business clouds can better enable non-profits to stay in touch with their partners, beneficiaries and donor base while respecting their privacy.
We're all beginning to realize just how important our identities, our privacy, and our choices are online - and how undervalued they are. With your personal cloud you are helping launch the first global network of apps and services that all respect your privacy. Your online information is precious. Until now, the growth of the Internet has been about large companies providing free services in exchange for using your online information.
Shouldn't it be you who decides who can see you - and all the details of your life?
We think so.
